Building SmartAttend

 — #Django#Biometrics#Architecture

SmartAttend is a multi-tenant biometric attendance platform. Organisations register their own staff and devices, and attendance is captured from fingerprint hardware rather than from a sheet of paper.

The stack

  • Django 5.2 and Django REST Framework for the API
  • Vite and Lit for the frontend
  • Fingerprint hardware integration for check-in
  • Role-based access control spanning every tenant

What made it interesting

The hard part was not the fingerprint reader, it was the tenancy. Every organisation needs its own users, devices, and attendance records, and none of them may see each other's data. That constraint shapes the models, the permissions, and every query in the API.

The second constraint was the hardware. A fingerprint reader is a stateful device sitting behind a flaky network, so the platform has to decide what to trust locally and what to reconcile with the server.
